How to use single jack headset on PC without splitter?

Almost all the headphones these days come with a built-in mic. It has been an essential feature ever since headphones have become a lot more than just devices made for listening to music.

They are extensively used for communication. The purpose for communicating can be gaming, work requirement, or just a casual call. The built-in mic comes in really handy every time.

Usually, such a headset has only one jack. They come with a single Tip Ring Ring Sleeve (TRRS) connector. TRRS is a type of 3.5 mm audio connector that has the ability to carry stereo audio and mic signals from one point to another.

Unfortunately, you can not connect such headphones to a PC directly. Since all the PC motherboards come with three different 3.5 mm audio jacks, one each for connecting headphones, mic, and line input, there is no way to put a headphone’s single audio jack and then use it for listening to music and talking on the mic together.

A device called an audio jack splitter is used in such cases to separate the TRSS audio jack’s outputs. This device can be purchased for around $10 and sometimes comes free when you purchase new headphones.

But for some reason, if you are unable to get one for yourself, then there is no need to worry because we are going to explain how to use a single jack headset on pc without a splitter in this article. Not just the headphone’s audio drivers, but we will also see how to use headset mic on pc with one jack.

How to use single jack headset on pc without splitter?

We are going to use an Android phone to connect the headset to your PC. But before we begin, you have to connect your PC and smartphone to the same WiFi or home network. Also, some applications need to be downloaded on your PC and smartphone. Here are the links to download them:

Application 1: SoundWire:

Application 2: DroidCam

Let’s start with the setup from the PC side.

Step 1: Run the SoundWire Server Setup executable application file you downloaded from the above links.

Step 2: Accept the license agreement of SoundWire and select the installation folder location. The software requires less than 10 MB of free space on your hard disk, so it can be installed anywhere. But preferably, install it in the program files.

Step 3: Then follow the on-screen instructions to install the SoundWire application on your PC.

Step 4: Next, open the DroidCam setup file.

Step 5: Select the installation folder.

If you have not connected your PC and smartphone to the same mobile network, ticking the following options is mandatory. Refer to the image below.

Step 6: Once the installation is completed, launch the SoundWire server from its Desktop or Start menu icon.

Step 7: When you open it up for the first time, you will be prompted to enable some of the application’s features blocked by the Windows Defender. Accept this prompt. You don’t have to worry about anything as the application is completely safe to use.

Now a window will open up that looks something like this:

Step 8: It’s time to switch to your Android phone. Open the SoundWire application that you downloaded from the Play Store in the beginning.

Step 9: Simply tap on the big app icon present in the center of the screen to connect it to your PC.

Step 10: The color of the icon will change when the application gets connected to the PC server. It will look something like this now:

Step 11: Switch back to your PC now. See the status of the PC application. It should show the status as Connected. Check out the screenshot below to understand how the application will look like after getting connected to the phone.

If you see the Connected status, then that means your PC is ready to send all the audio that is playing on it to your smartphone. To test it out, play any music/video on your PC. Its audio will be played from your phone now.

This is all you need to do to use a single jack headset on PC without splitter. But, to make the headphone’s mic usable,  we have to set up DroidCam on the PC and the smartphone.

The application is developed to let you use your smartphone as a wired/wireless webcam for your PC, but in this case, we are going to use it just to receive our smartphone’s mic (connected to the headphones) signals only.

Step 12: Open the DroidCam application from the Start menu or Desktop.

When you launch it for the first time, you will see two text boxes where you can set your smartphone’s IP address and Port. But since we do not know both the values, we will have to take a look at the DroidCam app on our phone.

Step 13: Open the application from your smartphone, and you’ll find its Device IP and Port on the first screen. Note these values.

Step 14: Enter the same values of device IP and DroidCam Port that is shown on your phone screen in the PC application.

Step 15: Now, you can either choose to enable or disable using your phone’s camera as a webcam by ticking the checkbox present in the DroidCam PC app.

Checking the Audio option is a must if you want to use your headphones’ mic on your PC. So make sure you do not miss it.

Step 17: Once you are done, hit Start.

Step 18: To check if your smartphone’s microphone is connected to your PC, right-click on the sound icon in the taskbar.

Step 19: Click on Sounds to open up sound settings.

Step 20: In this menu, open the Recordings tab and find the DroidCam Virtual Audio in the list of connected microphones.

Step 21: Right-click on it and set it as a Default Device.

Now, if you open any application that uses a mic/webcam, you will be able to see DroidCam as one of the connected devices (and that is your smartphone).

Step 22: Now, to conclude the setup process, connect your headphones via the 3.5 mm jack of your smartphone or using the Bluetooth connection.

You shall be able to hear your computer audio from the headphones, and at the same time, you can use your headphones’ mic on the PC now.

Final words

This is the way to use a single jack headset on pc without a splitter. The process is really complicated to follow, and it also introduces a slight delay in audio communication, making it unsuitable for some time-critical tasks like gaming.

While this is an excellent method to connect the headphones in case of an emergency when you can not get yourself an audio splitter, we do not recommend using this method if you can get one. Save yourself the trouble and order a good audio splitter online: Headphone 3.5mm Splitter Mic Cable for Computer.
