Use Apple headphones as mic on PC

If your primary PC microphone has run out of battery or is not working for any other reason, and you have to attend a meeting or record something, what will you do?

In such situations, devices like Apple headphones can save the day. They are easy to set up and offer excellent sound quality. Apple headphones can be used for listening to music as well as recording audio. Apple headphones are also compatible with all the popular video calling/video conferencing applications like Google Meet, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Cisco Webex Meetings, etc.

You can connect them to your Windows or Mac OS device and start using them right away. In this article, we’re going to explain how you can connect Apple headphones to your PC via a wired/wireless connection.

Using Apple EarPods as a mic in Windows 10

Before connecting Apple EarPods to your PC, there are a few things that you need to take care of.

First up, you have to check what type of 3.5 mm jack your PC has. There are two possibilities here. Your PC can have:

  • Case I  (Combo jack): Most laptops these days come with this connector. It is a single 3.5 connector that is enough for connecting headphones with an inbuilt mic.
  • Case II (Separate jack for headphone and mic): On PCs, two audio jacks are provided, one for connecting the headphones and the other for connecting microphones.

Case I: If you have a combo jack

If you have a Combo Jack, then that saves a lot of hassle. Simply follow these steps:

Step 1: Plug in the Apple EarPods in the 3.5 mm audio jack.

Step 2: Open the desktop and right-click on the speaker icon in the taskbar.

Step 3: Click on ‘Sounds’.

Step 4: Switch to the Recording tab.

Here, you will find the Microphone icon. If it is disabled, right-click on it and click ‘Enable’. Else, close the window.

Step 5: Open windows settings now.

Step 6: Click on Privacy settings.

Step 7: In the Privacy settings, scroll down on the left-hand side to find the Microphone tab and click on it.

Step 8: Here, you will have to turn on the Microphone access and Windows applications’ access to the microphone.

Step 9: Scroll down a bit more to find the Desktop apps’ access to the microphone and enable it too.

If these options are enabled already, then you don’t have to worry about anything. You can simply turn on the audio recorder or video conferencing application and start using your Earpods.

Case II: If you have a separate jack for headphone and mic

Coming to the second case, if you see two or three headphone jacks, then you have separate ports for your headphone and mic.

You will have to purchase an audio splitter now. This is a device that costs around $10 and is used to split the audio signals coming from a Combo audio jack into two different channels. One where you can connect audio output devices like headphones/speakers and another where you can connect audio input devices like microphones.

The mic channel will have a red color, a mic symbol, or both on it. It is easy to identify which channel is for what device. You can plug your Apple EarPods into the mic channel and follow all the steps in the previous case to get your EarPods’ mic working.

Using Apple AirPods as mic in Windows 10

Now to connect Apple AirPods to your PC, the initial steps are slightly different. Depending on whether your PC supports Bluetooth, again there can be two cases.

Case I: If your PC has Bluetooth

If you are a laptop or your PC has Bluetooth, then there is nothing to worry about. Simply follow these steps, and you will be connected in no time.

Step 1: From the desktop, right-click on the notifications icon in the taskbar.

Step 2: Right-click on the Bluetooth icon and go to its settings.

Step 3: In the Bluetooth settings, slide the slider under Bluetooth to the right to turn it on.

Step 4: Now, take out your AirPods from the case.

Step 5: Click on ‘Add Bluetooth or other devices’.

Step 6: On the next screen with the title ‘Add a device’, click on the ‘Bluetooth’ option.

Step 7: Your PC will look for Bluetooth devices ready to pair. Your AirPods will show up in the list. Connect to them.

You can not only use the AirPods as a mic now but also as the headphones. Use them to listen to music, record audio, or anything you want.

If you are facing issues with privacy settings, we suggest you check out the steps mentioned in configuring the Apple EarPods in the previous section. They will help you fix the audio recording permissions required for using mics.

Case II: If your PC doesn’t have Bluetooth

Things remain more or less the same as AirPods, except you will have to purchase a Bluetooth adapter for the PC. A Bluetooth adapter for a PC will plug into a USB port and add Bluetooth connectivity to your PC. They will cost around $15 and add Bluetooth support to your device.

Once you plug in the Bluetooth adapter, the Bluetooth settings icon will be available in the Windows notifications bar. Return to the previous section and follow all the steps starting from 1 to 7 to configure your mic to work.

Apple headphones might not provide you with the best mic quality, but the thing that makes them really unique is how easy it is to use them. Apple headphones are lightweight and portable, which makes it easy for us to carry them around. But most importantly, these devices can serve as a great backup in case your primary headphones/microphone ditches you.
